Pundit cites Steven Bergwijn as Liverpool fans told ‘don’t get excited’ over Cody Gakpo arrival

Cody Gakpo will not recreate his stunning form for PSV while wearing a Liverpool shirt.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Gakpo, 23, was announced as a Liverpool player on December 30 after a deal was agreed with PSV on 26 December.

Gakpo scored nine goals and registered 12 assists in 14 league starts for PSV before the World Cup break.

However, Wenham doesn’t expect his form in the Eredivise to translate to the Premier League after spending years watching Steven Bergwijn struggle at Tottenham.

“My view on this has not changed since Liverpool signed him instead of Man United,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Just look at Steven Bergwijn. He was hitting similar numbers over there before he signed for Tottenham and he did next to nothing for us.

“We will have to see how he does when Liverpool have all of their key players back. Alongside Salah and Diaz, anyone has a chance to score goals.

“I just don’t think anyone should expect him to come in and score the same number of goals he has been doing for PSV.

“It is very rare you get a player from an inferior league coming over and performing to the same standard in the Premier League, very rare.

“He is a talented player, there is absolutely no doubt about that. We saw it at the World Cup.

I just don’t think the fans should get too excited yet or expect him to hit those same numbers.”
