Pundit ‘delighted’ by confirmed Newcastle United news

Newcastle United will be “delighted” to have a difficult Champions League group.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie is “delighted” for the Magpies to have European football back at St James’ Park.

After an impressive Premier League campaign in 2022-23, Eddie Howe’s side finished in the top four and secured a spot in the group stages of the top European competition.

The north-east giants were drawn alongside European big boys Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.

McAvennie has backed Howe’s side to cause the European giants problems in their upcoming games.

They have got a team that is fearless,” he told Football Insider.

Eddie Howe will just go out and play and if they get beat, they get beat. They are doing better than what I thought they would have done by this time.

They are not going to challenge for the league this season but I did not even think they would be in the Champions League yet.

St James’ Park will be absolutely bouncing with the Champions League anthem back there. The Geordies deserve it and I am delighted for them and that they have got three big clubs.

They might not do it this year but they will get back into it next year and they will be more prepared.

Of course they will try and get to the next stage but the supporters will just love having these teams come to St James’ Park. It is absolutely huge. I think they will go and have a go so it wouldn’t surprise me if they got through.
