Pundit: Digne is licking his lips after ‘perfect’ Everton transfer news

Noel Whelan has claimed Everton have sealed the “perfect” competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Salomon Rondon.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 31-year-old is exactly what the Toffees need to make the most of their options out wide.

Everton confirmed they had signed Rondon on a free transfer from Dalian on deadline day (31st August).

The Venezuela international has penned a two-year deal at Goodison Park, with Everton holding an optional one-year extension.

Everton also bolstered their attack with Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend over the summer.

Whelan suggested the likes of Gray and marauding full-back Lucas Digne would be licking their lips at having Rondon in the box.

Asked if Rondon was the perfect cover and competition for Calvert-Lewin, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, absolutely.

“He leads the line, a handful up front, can run in behind, brings others into play.

“Look at the wide players now at Everton, Demarai Gray, even Digne getting forward. You put the ball in the box, you know he’s going to attack it, very much like Calvert-Lewin.

“I mean, they’ve got an abundance of wide players now. You need these players in the box to really put the danger on the opposition.

“With Calvert-Lewin or Rondon in the box as an option, why would you not want to get the ball in the box? It sounds like the perfect plan for me

“It’s like for like, it’s another main target striker up there that you need and it’s an option for Everton as well.”

Rondon scored 35 goals in 140 Premier League appearances during his time at West Brom and Newcastle.
