Pundit digs at FSG as Liverpool lose ‘pace’ with Man City

Paul Robinson has suggested a lack of investment is partly to blame for Liverpool starting the season slowly.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said Jurgen Klopp’s side are “light in midfield” and have not improved their squad like City.

The Reds have endured a lacklustre start to the 2022-23 campaign and were humiliated 4-1 by Napoli on Wednesday (7 September).

Speaking to BT Sport (7 September), Klopp claimed his team may need to “reinvent” themselves after the loss at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Injuries to Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain compounded Jurgen Klopp’s troubles.

When asked by Football Insider if owners Fenway Sports Group were to blame for failing to invest sufficient funds this summer, Robinson said: “They were always going to be light in midfield and Klopp knew that.

“He said he was happy to go with what he has got though.

“Look, you cannot rely on Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain being fit all season. That has come back to bight them early on.

“They let [Georginio] Wijnaldum go which was naive in my opinion given the amount of games that he played. They should have brought him back in the summer.

“James Milner and Jordan Henderson are another year older. There is a lot of emphasis on Harvey Elliott who is a young player and not a recognised centre-midfielder.

“It was an area they were always going to be light in. The manager knew that.

“If you want to stay at the top you have to evolve your squad. You have to improve your squad every season. Look at what Pep [Guardiola] has done at Man City. Liverpool have not kept the pace.”
