Pundit Exclusive: Celtic title would be ‘Forever’ remembered for wrong reasons

Alan Hutton suggested a shadow would be cast over this year’s campaign if Celtic were to be awarded the title early.

The former Scotland international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Hoops are in a position of strength as the SPFL attempt to find the best solution on how to conclude the current campaign.

Rangers and the SPFL are currently at loggerheads over the handling of last week’s vote on the proposal to end the season now and take the current standings as final.

If approved, and the SPL were to follow suit, the decision would hand Neil Lennon’s side their ninth consecutive top-flight title with the league leaders currently 13 points ahead of second-placed Rangers.

When asked by Football Insider how the developments would have been received in Parkhead, Hutton said: “Celtic are in a strong position. They were flying before this virus stuff. They will probably sit back and see how it pans out.

“We know they are going for the ninth in a row and you would hate to be given a title and for it to be forever remembered as the one that was given out because of coronavirus. It is difficult. Yes, you want to be champions but you still have to finish the season in my eyes. If they get awarded the title everybody will know what happened that year.

“But they are doing it the right way. They have made their judgement.”

The SPFL proposed to finish the season with immediate effect to enable the release of prize money to help support clubs through these financially troubling times.

However, the Gers claim to have evidence of serious foul play from a whistleblower that there was serious foul play in the SPFL’s handling of the members’ ballot.

The club website insisted “it is in the interests of all Scottish clubs and supporters that the evidence, which is alarming, be addressed as quickly as possible.”

In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that an offer has been tabled for ex-Everton man.
