Pundit expects flurry of signings on Tyneside after ‘huge’ Newcastle United development
Newcastle United could now seal a flurry of January signing after progressing to the League Cup semi-finals.
That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ progress.
Eddie Howe’s side reached their first semi-final since 2005 after beating Leicester City 2-0 on Tuesday (10 January).
The win sets up a two-legged semi-final against Southampton.
Newcastle are yet to make any signing this month despite questions over the depth of the squad as they look to reach a cup final and finish as high up the table as possible.
McManus claims progression in the cup could now lead to fresh faces arriving at St James’ Park.
“I think people have expected Newcastle to be more active in the transfer market,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“The owners are still very wealthy and you look at the position Newcastle are in. I think they do need a couple.
“The whole club is buzzing at the moment and I think signing another top player would add to that. Isak has come back and that’s going to help but I think they need a creative midfielder.
“A number 10 could come in and take the burden off Almiron. They are solid in terms of the defensive midfield, they are hard to score against.
“But creatively they need to show a bit more. I’m just wondering if that huge result against Leicester will spark something because you can see the progress.

“The owners might wonder where Newcastle can get to if they add a couple more faces this month.
“I wouldn’t be surprised.”
