Pundit fears Everton ‘disaster’ after Guardian’s manager update

Noel Whelan has urged Everton to hand Duncan Ferguson the manager’s job until the end of the season as talks with potential candidates continue.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted making the wrong appointment now would “spell disaster” for the Toffees.

As reported by the Guardian on Monday (January 24th), Everton were set to hold talks with Portuguese manager Vitor Pereira over the vacant post.

The Toffees have also reportedly interviewed Frank Lampard, while Wayne Rooney, Roberto Martinez and Niko Kovac are also on the shortlist.

However, Whelan insisted the Merseyside outfit should wait until the end of the season before making a permanent appointment.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I really do think that right now is such the wrong time to look for another manager.

“There isn’t really anybody out there right now. I think the best thing they can do is give it to someone that knows the club in Duncan Ferguson. Give it to him until the end of the season.

“Let’s start getting some continuity and togetherness back at the club. I think he’s the perfect man to do it. We’re already over halfway into the season now.

“I think chopping and changing, bringing another manager in, this will just spell disaster. Right now they don’t need to start firing their guns and quickly try to get somebody. Take your time this time.

“Think about it properly. Realise that what the club needs right now is stability and probably somebody who’s been there for a long time in Duncan.

“Let him get the best out of the players, like he did last time, until the end of the season. That gives you the time to sit down and really assess.

“Are there managers who have been sacked before the end of the season? Someone who we can give the full transfer window, the full season with the players?

“I think sometimes they can be a little bit too quick to go out there and just bring someone in. Right now, they just need to have Duncan Ferguson at the helm.

“Let him get that fire back in their bellies. Let him get set up with the coaches that are around him and then, come the end of the season, assess where they are.”
