Pundit fears for Erik ten Hag amid Man United latest – ‘this could be the end…’

Man United must back Erik ten Hag rather than Cristiano Ronaldo if the club is to progress this season.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest controversy at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo headed down the tunnel before the end of his side’s 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday (19 October).

As quoted by BBC Sport (20 October), who report that the 37-year-old briefly entered the changing room before leaving Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag admitted he will “deal with” the situation.

Later that day, Sky Sports reported Ronaldo has been dropped for his side’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday (22 October).

McManus insists Ten Hag must play his cards right or risk upsetting the balance of his squad.

“You have to lay down the law here,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“If you look at it, Ten Hag could still be at Man United for a long time. Ronaldo won’t be there for long. So the club have to back the manager here.

“I can’t imagine Ronaldo’s teammates are very happy with him so punishing him or dropping him or whatever will probably not be a problem.

“Ten Hag needs to play this right because you have seen what happens when the players at Man United get too much power.

“They can get rid of a manager. I don’t think that will happen this time but you have to think about things like that.

“I think this could be the end of Ronaldo at Man United. Back the manager, he clearly doesn’t want him. It’s a big decision but it has to be made.”

Ronaldo has made 12 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions this season.

He has started just six of those games.
