Pundit ‘feels sorry’ for Calvert-Lewin after horror Everton reveal

Kevin Phillips “feels sorry” for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin after he endured a torrid 90 minutes on his return from injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner said the 24-year-old “will be gutted” with his performance at Goodison Park.

Calvert-Lewin made his long awaited return from injury on Sunday as the Toffees were beaten 3-2 by Brighton.

Jordan Pickford (41) even had more touches than Calvert-Lewin (27) in what was a frustrating afternoon for the striker.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Calvert-Lewin’s display, Phillips said: “It’s not the return he would have wanted.

“It will take a while for him to get back to his best because he has been out a long time.

“I feel sorry for him. You do not want to be missing a penalty because you are back on a low straight away. He will need to put that to bed very quickly.

“He’s a little bit rusty but there is no doubt about it, he is a top-quality player. I have no doubt he will be back to his best very soon. He just needs to get his sharpness and match fitness.

“He’ll be gutted with what happened yesterday but he’ll put it right in the next game I’m sure.”
