Pundit ‘flabbergasted’ as Newcastle United victims of major injustice

Fulham should not have been awarded a penalty in their 1-0 loss to Newcastle United.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about last weekend’s controversial scenes.

Fulham were awarded a second-half penalty in Sunday’s (15 January) clash against the Magpies, after the VAR judged Kieran Trippier to have fouled Bobby Decordova-Reid.

However, replays showed the Fulham man stand on Trippier’s foot before the foul was committed.

McManus wad delighted to see Aleksandar Mitrović miss the resulting spot-kick as a result.

“I watched the game and when I first saw it I thought maybe,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“But looking back, it is clear that the Fulham player overruns the ball and stands on Trippier’s foot before Trippier tackles him.

“The first contact is the Fulham player on the Newcastle player. I don’t understand how they can’t see that. I was flabbergasted that a penalty was awarded.

“Luckily justice was done and they didn’t concede but that decision sums up what is going on with VAR at the moment.

“There are so many examples of VAR getting things wrong at the moment. It’s not just up here [Scotland]. It’s still going on in the Premier League.

“Some of the decisions clubs aren’t getting, ridiculous.”

Newcastle went on to win the game 1-0 thanks to Alexander Isak’s last-minute header.

The Magpies are next in action against Crystal Palace on Sunday (21 January).
