Pundit flames Bruno Fernandes after Man United latest – ‘captains don’t do that’

Frank McAvennie can’t understand why Bruno Fernandes is captain of Man United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker doesn’t understand why Erik ten Hag continues to play Fernandes.

The 28-year-old came under fire last month in United’s 7-0 defeat to Liverpool for appearing to ask to be subbed off and was labelled a “disgrace” by Red Devils legend Gary Neville.

Fernandes has been given the captain’s armband whilst Harry Maguire is out of favour and was integral in the side’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday (16 April).

As quoted by the Daily Mail (17 April), Roy Keane described the Portugal international’s performance at the weekend as “pure quality” and said the quality of his passes are “a dream” for the United strikers.

But McAvennie has been unimpressed by the midfielder this season.

Ten Hag seems to like Fernandes, I do not know why but he seems to like him,” he told Football Insider.

I think he is all for himself, I do not think he is a team player.

I do not know why he is the captain because he is not a team player and captains do not do that.

Fernandes made the switch to Old Trafford from Sporting in 2020 and his current contract runs until 2026 with the option of a further 12 months.

The midfielder has made 49 appearances for Ten Hag’s side across all competitions this season.

In those outings he has scored ten goals and provided 13 assists.

In other news, Man United star ‘happy’ but unimpressed with all contract offers.
