Pundit fumes as Cameron Carter-Vickers Celtic footage emerges – ‘it took me seconds’
Alan Hutton doesn’t understand why it took VAR officials so long to award Hearts a penalty against Celtic on Saturday (22 October).
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Rangers defender made his mind up “within seconds” that Cameron Carter-Vickers had fouled Cammy Devlin.
As shown on Sky Sports (24 October), the Hearts midfielder went to ground after a challenge from the Celtic centre-back.
Referee Nick Walsh did not initially award a penalty but VAR Steven McLean told the whistler to take another look at the incident and the spot kick was given.
Lawrence Shankland scored the penalty but ultimately the Hoops won the game 4-3.
Hutton said the referee made the right decision but he didn’t understand the delay.
“When I was watching the game and I saw the tackle, I immediately thought it was a penalty,” he told Football Insider.
“Just where the ball went, where the players ended up, I thought it was a penalty. Checking VAR, the decision was slowed down, I still thought Devlin got to the ball first.
“Carter-Vickers catches him with the sole of his foot therefore it’s a penalty. I made my mind up within seconds. So I do not really understand why they had to look at ten different angles, multiple times and take so long.
“I think the bottom line is there is going to be teething problems. They are going to take that extra little bit of time just to make sure they get everything right. I think in the future it will speed up.“
