Pundit hails ‘brilliant’ new Celtic signing after what he’s seen from Jota

Alex McLeish has insisted there is already competition for player of the year at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers boss said Jota has been “brilliant” for the Hoops.

The 23-year-old has two goals and three assists in three games so far this season.

His long-distance strike on Sunday (14 August) helped Ange Postecoglou’s side to a 5-0 victory over Kilmarnock.

The winger spent last season on loan at Parkhead in a deal that included an option to buy.

On 1 July, Celtic confirmed the permanent signing of Jota from Benfica.

McLeish suggested the Portuguese forward is already a contender for player of the season.

They’ve just started the season and already there’s a player of the year competition because of some of the performances,” he told Football Insider.

But Jota has lit the season on fire, he’s been brilliant. That’s what you want from every single player after a pre-season. You want them to hit the ground running, you want them to be as sharp as possible and Jota just looks as if he’s on another level.

He finds the space, he can hit the long rangers, he can take people on, he can set up goals, he’s been a fantastic signing. What a start to the season that he has had, the only thing he can now concentrate on is the consistency and making it through the whole season with that kind of form which is going to make Celtic a formidable side.
