Pundit hits out at Antony after what he’s seen at Man United – ‘what are you doing?’

Frank McAvennie has claimed Erik ten Hag is taking Antony’s “basic rights away” at Man United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said the 22-year-old has been spending too much time tracking back.

The winger was in the starting lineup for United’s game against Everton on Sunday (9 October).

Antony was on the scoresheet for the 2-1 win over the Toffees.

As quoted by Manchester Evening News (9 October), the Dutch boss said the winger has improved “defending-wise” and insisted he was “really good and really disciplined” against Frank Lampard’s side.

However last week, as reported by the Sun (4 October), the Brazil international ignored Ten Hag’s instructions to track back in the 6-3 defeat the Man City (2 October).

McAvennie insisted ignoring his boss was the right call from Antony.

I have seen him just outside the box and firing the ball up the pitch and I think ‘what are you doing back there’,” he told Football Insider.

It is alright chasing somebody back but you can’t do that all the time. He is an attacking player who is chasing it and having to boot it up the park to nobody.

I get fighting for the team and getting back but when you pay that kind of money for an attacking player you want him up there doing things that he is supposed to.

It is taking his basic rights away. He will get fed up with it. It is alright doing it and helping your teammates once or twice but you can’t do it all the time.

On 1 September, the Red Devils confirmed the signing of the Brazilian from Ajax.
