Pundit hits out at Man United as new David De Gea details emerge – ‘it doesn’t sit right with me’
Man United’s decision to pull the plug on David De Gea’s contract and press ahead with the signing of Andre Onana “doesn’t sit right with me”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton believes that United’s decision to let De Gea go was harsh, but still understandable.
Man United confirmed on Saturday that De Gea is departing the club after his contract expired following a 12-year tenure at the club.
Football Insider revealed on Friday (30 June) that Man United U-turned on David De Gea’s contract as he didn’t have the full trust of manager Erik ten Hag.
It is now confirmed that the 32-year-old will not return to Old Trafford in the 2023-24 campaign as De Gea officially became a free agent on Friday despite agreeing a new Man United contract around the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday (1 July) that Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is at the “top of the list” to replace De Gea between the sticks at Old Trafford.
With De Gea departing, Hutton believes it was a harsh, but necessary decision by United.
“Onana came up and they had to choose a new signing over a potentially unhappy De Gea ,” he told Football Insider.

“United had their offer on the table, and I guess they were tired of waiting which is why they pulled out of a deal.
“I do think it’s a bit harsh, as he has been a major servant for the club for many, so it still doesn’t fully sit right with me.”
