Pundit: ‘I’m sure’ Liverpool in talks over new Firmino contract after Sky journalist update
Alex McLeish has suggested talks over a possible new contract for Roberto Firmino may have already started at Liverpool.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager touted the possibility of “very private” discussions at Anfield.
As reported by Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg on Wednesday (19 January), Firmino is set to hold discussions over his future in the coming months.
Liverpool will reportedly let Firmino decide whether to open contract negotiations or not.
The 30-year-old’s current terms expire in 2023.
However, McLeish insisted some sort of discussions will have already taken place.
“I’m sure there are talks going on,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“They can write what they want in the newspapers and media and stuff but for all we know, there might be talks going on.
“Talks could be going full steam ahead but on a very private basis.
“He has been a terrific asset to Liverpool. Not just his goals but his assists and the way he helps the team.
“A lot of people would underrate that.”
Firmino joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim back in 2015 and has won the Premier League and Champions League title with the Reds.
He has established himself as a firm favourite at Anfield with his work ethic and technical ability in attack.
The 55-cap international has scored 94 times in 310 appearances across all competitions for the Reds.

However, he has been blighted by injuries and fitness issues during the current campaign.
Firmino has still managed to score seven goals in 18 appearances despite his issues.
