Pundit in ‘no doubt’ about Liverpool signing James Maddison after podcast reveal
Noel Whelan has claimed the signing of James Maddison could kickstart the midfield rebuild at Liverpool.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Jurgen Klopp’s side need a “number ten” who can “open doors” for the likes of Darwin Nunez.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast (19 November), Liverpool icon Graeme Souness suggested his old side should look to sign Maddison, 25, next summer as a potential Jude Bellingham alternative.
Newcastle United have a long-held interest in the England international, who is part of the Three Lions squad currently at the World Cup.
Football Insider revealed on 24 September that the Magpies are planning to submit a new offer for Maddison in January after seeing two bids rejected during the summer.
The Leicester star has notched seven goals and four assists in 13 Premier League games this season to help the Foxes recover after a terrible start to the 2022-23 campaign.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he’s someone who can transform Liverpool – and indeed most sides.
“Liverpool need someone who can open up doors for the likes of Nunez and see that kind of pass.
“They’ve got a long tradition of number tens, so that’s the style of player the Liverpool fans love to watch.

“He can score and create, he’s got intelligence, and he’s a set piece specialist. Let’s not forget, he’s also still quite young.
“This is where Liverpool need to rebuild. I’ve got no doubt about it, whether he goes to Anfield, Newcastle, or anywhere – he will bring quality.”
