Pundit in ‘no doubt’ about Tottenham signing Alexis Mac Allister after report
Noel Whelan has backed Tottenham to sign “impressive” Argentina star Alexis Mac Allister after his performances at the World Cup.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted there is “no doubt” that the 23-year-old can be Brighton’s latest big-money export after the sales of Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma in the summer.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes (14 December), Tottenham are in a “four-way battle” to recruit Mac Allister in January – alongside Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Juventus.
The midfielder has started each of the Seagulls’ 14 Premier League games this term – scoring five goals.
He has also been a key man for Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar, scoring once in five starts to help his country to the final after being benched for the opening loss against Saudi Arabia.
Mac Allister is out of contract at the Amex Stadium in June 2025 after joining for a reported £7million in 2019.
When asked if he is good enough to step into this Tottenham side, Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “There’s no doubt about it, I’ve been so impressed with him.
“He’s shown real class in that central midfield area. The energy, the quality – it’s just another great bit of business from Brighton.
“Look at the money they’ve already made with Cucurella and Bissouma – you’d have to say that Mac Allister is next.
“He could come back as a World Cup winner.

“He’s handled the Premier League pressure, he’s handled the Argentina pressure – and I can see him fitting into Antonio Conte’s style at Tottenham too.
“He’s very aggressive, gets into good areas, and comes up with goals as well. He’d be a massive plus for most Premier League sides.”
