Pundit ‘infuriated’ by ‘hurtful’ Marcus Rashford controversy as Man United footage analysed
Noel Whelan has claimed a “lack of common sense is hurting teams” after Man United star Marcus Rashford saw a goal disallowed for a “ridiculous” handball.
The former Leeds striker was speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the “infuriating” controversy during the Red Devils’ 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday (9 October).
As seen in footage posted by the Sky Sports Premier League Twitter account (10 October), Rashford saw his goal chalked off for handball after VAR review as the ball ricocheted off his arm under a challenge from James Tarkowski.
The footage also shows two similar goals from West Ham stars Michail Antonio and Gianluca Scamacca – both of which were allowed to stand after VAR review.
Rashford, who was named the Premier League Player of the Month for September, was denied his sixth goal of the season.
Whelan insisted the speed at which the England international was running should have been a mitigating factor in the VAR decision.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “The lack of common sense is really hurting teams.
“He’s running so quickly, there’s a tackle, and the ball jumps up. It’s not like his hands are above his head.
“It’s not a position which affects where the ball is going. You can’t do anything about that, it just jumps up into his bicep.
“When you’re running at that speed and a player jumps in, they’ve got to let that go.
“I’m a striker, and that would infuriate the life out of me if that was disallowed.

“It’s different when it’s a cross coming into the box and there’s a clear handle on the ball – but this was outside the box.
“To me, it’s a ridiculous decision. It’s as good a goal as you’re going to get.”
