Pundit issues ‘100 per cent’ Newcastle claim after source update on ‘cheeky’ Trippier bid

The January capture of Kieran Trippier will bring “much-needed” experience into the Newcastle ranks, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 31-year-old could be just the first player through the door in a “very busy January” for the Magpies.

This site revealed last week (15 December) that Newcastle are growing increasingly confident of signing Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier next month.

The 35-time England international is keen to return to the Premier League and wants to complete the deal early in the winter transfer window.

Whelan claimed Newcastle are wise to target players like former Tottenham defender Trippier.

“He will bring much-needed experience – he’s played at the highest level, been in the England set-up, won La Liga last season,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“These are the sort of deals Newcastle should be looking to make, players coming out of contract that you can put in that cheeky bid to get them in.

“But they need to get them in. It’s a crucial window for Eddie Howe now. He’s got to get each and every one of these signings 100% correct.

“They’re looking at the centre-halves and full-backs. They need a creative midfielder, defensive midfielder, and another striker to share the load with Callum Wilson.

“It’s going to be very busy for them in January, and you hope that whoever they can get in does the job. Otherwise, they could slip out of the Premier League.”

Newcastle have still won just one top-flight game this season after their 4-0 defeat against Man City.

The Magpies sit 19th in the Premier League and have conceded the most goals this term (41).
