Pundit issues ‘absolutely incredible’ Newcastle United transfer claim after source’s update – pundit

Newcastle United will still sign quality players this summer despite suffering several blows in the early stages of the summer.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the club’s transfer struggles.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider on Monday (6 June) that Newcastle are now prioritising other attacking options after being quoted £60million for Moussa Diaby.

According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards (6 June), the Magpies have ended interest in Dean Henderson and have suffered a blow in their hopes to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It is claimed Everton will not sell to a direct rival.

McAvennie expects this trend to continue with the likelihood of multiple early deals slim.

“They need better players but the ones they want won’t go there at this moment in time,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Some top players are lazy sods and they won’t want to join now. They will want to join at the end and take all the glory.

“They will sign damn good players, better players than they have been signing. But in maybe two years, that’s when you will get the superstars.

“Newcastle will get the odd one or two before then, of course they will. You want professionals, not people who are going there for the money.

“Once those players see the crowd, they will be delighted they have made the choice. I remember going there when it was Keegan’s boys, absolutely incredible.”

On Wednesday (8 June) Matt Targett became the club’s first summer signing following his impressive loan spell during the 2021-22 campaign.

After the left-back joined the Magpies in January 2021, he played every single minute until the end of the season apart from the game against his parent club on 13 February.

In other news, Newcastle United have been told to re-sign Georginio Wijnaldum as transfer decision close.
