Pundit issues behind-the-scenes Man City claim after Joao Cancelo quits – ‘something is going on’

Alan Hutton has insisted something has happened in the background at Man City to prompt Joao Cancelo’s exit.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa wasn’t surprised by Pep Guardiola’s ruthlessness and suggested Cancelo has not been at the level we are all used to seeing.

On Tuesday (31 January), City confirmed that the 28-year-old has joined Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season that includes an option to buy for more than £61million.

The right-back’s City contract runs until 2027.

Cancelo had made 17 Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side before leaving last week and has been replaced by 18-year-old Rico Lewis in recent weeks.

When asked if he was surprised by Guardiola’s ruthlessness, Hutton told Football Insider:We have seen it in the past, he never stands in a player’s way.

If they do not want to be there, if they want to move somewhere else it is not a problem. It does not matter who you are.

I feel obviously something has gone on in the background because it happened ever so quickly. But he has not been playing at the level that he has shown in previous seasons. Especially after this World Cup.

Man City

Lewis has come in and done really well, [Nathan] Ake has done well at left-back, there is Kyle Walker as well. He has found it difficult to get minutes and when he has he has probably not played at the level Pep expects him to.

Something is going on, it happened really quickly but let’s not kid ourselves Bayern Munich are a really good team. So I think he will go there and do well.

In other news, a pundit has told Man City to accept Bernardo Silva offer and complete signing of star lined up to replace him.
