Pundit issues ‘behind-the-scenes’ Tottenham claim after Steven Bergwijn exit twist
Alan Hutton has suggested Steven Bergwijn’s transfer saga at Tottenham could “drag on” throughout the summer due to Daniel Levy.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender insisted the Spurs chairman will fight tooth and nail to recoup as much money as possible for the 24-year-old.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano on Monday (6 June), Spurs are looking for around £25.5million for Bergwijn, with Ajax among the clubs working on a prospective deal.
The Daily Mail (3 June) claim Spurs have already rejected a £17million bid from the Dutch giants.
Hutton admitted he can see Levy playing hardball to get the best deal possible.
Asked if he thought Spurs could price Bergwijn out of a move, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think there’s always that worry they could do that.
“He’s been there two-and-a-half seasons and I’ve actually felt sorry for him, if I’m honest. I think he has got all the attributes. I don’t see him day-to-day. Is he doing enough in training? What’s going on behind the scenes?
“You do see flashes of a very good player there. He’s not been able to break through on a regular basis. I understand him wanting to leave.
“You’re dealing with Daniel Levy, who’s always going to try and make the most out of a situation. I can’t remember exactly how much they paid for him, I think it was quite a big deal to be fair.
“They’re going want as much back as possible. This is one that could drag out, it’s got that written all over it. This could take a while to happen.

“It just depends where you see him fitting within that squad. I know it’s a loss, then you’ve got to add in wages and all the rest of it. If he’s literally going sit there and not do a thing, maybe not make matchday squads, then every transfer window that goes on, that valuation goes down.
“Sometimes it’s better cutting your losses, even though I think he’s a good player with lots to give.”
