Pundit issues ‘best in England football’ claim amid Ben White development at Arsenal

Arsenal star Ben White does not deserve to be in the England squad ahead of Eric Dier.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

White, 24, was dropped from the latest England squad while Dier, 28, was handed his first call-up for 18 months.

During his first season at The Emirates, White made 32 Premier League appearances and cemented himself as a leader in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Wenham insists White is not good enough to be challenging Dier for a space in the England squad.

“For me, Eric Dier has been the best English central defender for the last 18 months,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“If White is trying to squeeze in as a fifth-choice centre-back, there are other targets to be looking at. The likes of Conor Coady, Marc Guehi.

“There are other people who are a more realistic aim for himself and Arsenal fans to be targeted rather than the best central defender in English football who is English.

“For me, Dier will impress Southgate and I think he will then go on to start for England at the World Cup. White has been playing at right-back this season as well.

“So he’s not good enough to make it as a centre-half at Arsenal, he has been forced out to right-back to accommodate Saliba.

“Dier plays for a Champions League team, sorry Ben White.”

Arsenal face Tottenham in their next Premier League game on Saturday (1 October).

Both sides are currently unbeaten after each playing seven Premier League games this term.
