Pundit issues ‘big’ Andy Robertson claim after ‘surprise’ Liverpool development

It is a “surprise” that injured Liverpool star Andy Robertson has spent so much time in the critical injury zone over the last four years.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid the latest on the left-back.

Robertson, 28, is currently sidelined with a hamstring complaint but is expected to return soon after the international break.

Data collected by FIFPro and relayed by The Athletic last Friday (16 September) shows that Robertson has played 65.1 per cent of his matches in the last four years in the critical zone, where players are most at risk of injury.

McLeish has suggested Robertson should have been given more opportunities to rest.

“Andy is such an important player for Liverpool and Scotland so it is no surprise for me to hear that he is playing all of those games,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“The red zone thing is interesting. Usually, you get five or six games and if you go into the red zone then they rotate the player out.

“There has been a few times where Andy has come out for Tsimikas but there have been other times where he has come on off the bench, I thought that was always surprising.

“Then you realise that red zone has probably been flagged up and that is a big part of why he has this current injury.

“He is a very strong and resilient guy so I’m sure he will be back soon.”
