Pundit issues ‘big’ Liverpool claim after confirmed injury update
Alan Hutton has claimed Liverpool should use their “big squad” to avoid injury problems.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said the Reds have to “get on with it” despite their growing injury list.
Joel Matip is the most recent player to be struck by injury.
He was omitted for the squad for the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace last Monday (15 August), despite featuring in the season opening 2-2 draw with Fulham on 6 August.
Speaking to club media (21 August), Jurgen Klopp confirmed Matip will be out of action for around three weeks.
The Reds boss said his side’s injury situation is “really horrible” and insisted it will be difficult for the team to bounce back.
When asked if Klopp complained too much about injuries given the size of his squad, Hutton told Football Insider: “Of course.

“The job as a manager is to protect you’re players, it’s as simple as that. He’ll protect Nunez even though he’s done wrong, it’s just what they do. If you look at the amount of games Liverpool played last season, they went the distance in everything so he complains about that as well. But you just have to do that and get on with it.
“He’s losing players which isn’t ideal, he wants his strongest starting squad but they’ve got a big squad for a reason, they can rotate it. Again, I think he’s just protecting his squad after what would be a poor start for Liverpool.“
