Pundit issues ‘big’ West Ham verdict after update on ‘top-class’ Broja pursuit

Paul Robinson has insisted West Ham cannot wait until the summer to sign a striker amid interest in Chelsea’s Armando Broja.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England number one said it would be “a big ask” for Michail Antonio to play the rest of the season as West Ham’s only striker.

Antonio remains the only recognised number nine in David Moyes’ squad after Sebastien Haller’s exit 12 months ago.

An Irons source told Football Insider (27 January) the club have narrowed down their striker search to Chelsea’s Broja, 20, and Blackburn’s Ben Brereton Diaz, 22.

Broja has been in scintillating form since joining Southampton on a season-long loan deal.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the Albanian forward, Robinson said: “I’ve been very impressed with him at Southampton.

“He’s done well in his loan spell.

“West Ham need a body in sooner than the summer though. The squad is not strong enough to cope with the Premier League and Europa League over the next few months. It’d be a big ask for Michail Antonio.

“David Moyes has rotated his squad to a certain extent this season but his squad is not as deep as the teams around them.

“Broja is a top-class player and would be a great addition but that’s one for the summer. I don’t think West Ham can wait until then to sign another striker.”

Broja has been one of the Premier League’s breakthrough stars this season.

He has scored seven goals in 21 appearances across all competitions.
