Pundit issues ‘brilliant’ Gianluca Scamacca claim after what he’s seen from West Ham in person

West Ham now have two “brilliant” strikers to choose from after the signing of Gianluca Scamacca was confirmed.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Hammers’ latest signing.

West Ham confirmed the signing of Sassuolo striker Scamacca on 26 July.

Mail Online reported on Monday (25 July), that the Hammers had agreed a £30.5million fee with the Italian club for the 23-year-old.

Scamacca notched 16 goals for Sassuolo last term while Jarrod Bowen finished as the Hammers’ top scorer with 18 in all competitions.

McLeish likes what he has seen from Scamacca and insists the Hammers have signed an “intelligent” footballer.

“I watched West Ham v Rangers in person a few weeks ago and Antonio still has tremendous ability to beat defenders, he is so quick,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild

“Scamacca is a player that I have seen a wee bit of in the Italian football during the season, it looks like a great bit of recruitment.

“Italian strikers are always pretty knowledgable about the game, they are intelligent footballers.

“It’s a long time since West Ham have bought a striker now they have two brilliant options and I am looking forward to seeing him in a Hammers shirt.”

West Ham

Michail Antonio is the Hammers’ only senior striker and scored 10 goals in 36 Premier League appearances during the 2021-22 season.

The 32-year-old is under contract at the London Stadium until the summer of 2024.
