Pundit issues ’embarrassing’ Tottenham claim as Harry Kane footage analysed

Frank McAvennie has slammed VAR after Harry Kane’s last-gasp winner for Tottenham against Sporting CP was disallowed.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker claimed “nobody knows the rules” anymore and said the technology is not doing what it is supposed to do.

As shown on BT Sport (26 October), Kane thought he had secured Spurs a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a last minute goal against the Portuguese club.

After a lengthy VAR review, the England international was deemed to be marginally offside and the goal was disallowed.

The game finished 1-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium leaving everything to play for on the final matchday of the group stages.

McAvennie insisted VAR is no longer being used for its original purpose.

Nobody knows the rules of VAR anymore,” he told Football Insider.

VAR was supposed to be there to help the referee. They are ruining the game.

See if you have got to start putting lines out, then you are onside. It is as simple as that. It should be that if you are level you are onside. It is an entertainment sport. It is embarrassing.

As quoted by football.london (26 October), Antonio Conte could not understand the decision and insisted the goal should have stood.

The Lilywhites’ boss will be absent from the touchline for the final game of the group stages after being sent off for his protests following the disallowed goal.
