Pundit issues ‘extortionate’ Chelsea claim amid Reece James talks update
Frank McAvennie insists that Chelsea should not let Reece James leave the club even if they receive an “extortionate” offer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said the Blues will be desperate to keep hold of the defender.
The i reported last Thursday (7 July) that the London club are set to begin new contract talks with the 22-year-old.
The right-back currently has three years left on his deal at Stamford Bridge.
Owner Todd Boehly is said to be interested in securing the England international’s long-term future with the club.
Real Madrid and Man City meanwhile are reportely monitoring James’ situation.
When asked for his assessment of the latest, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Why would they want to let somebody like Reece James go?
“He’s a good player, I think he’ll be an important part of the team next year.
“The price range for players now, you can never guess what it might be. Some of the money being offered for players is extortionate.
“What would Reece James be worth? He’s an awfully good player so I don’t think they would let him go.
“Everyone has a price but I think they would be very hesitant to sell James because he’s been a damn good player for them.“

James scored six times and laid on 10 assists in 39 appearances in 2021-22.
The defender is currently with the Chelsea squad on their pre-season tour of the United States.
In other news, a pundit can’t believe Aston Villa could sign ‘next Mason Mount’ after update.
