Pundit issues ‘incredible’ Newcastle United claim after ‘big’ development this week

Newcastle United should prioritise winning the League Cup this season.

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Newcastle sealed their place in the quarter-final of the League Cup by recording a 1-0 win over Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Tuesday (20 December).

They will now face Leicester City at home as they look to end their trophy hoodoo.

Eddie Howe has never gone past the quarter-finals of the competition as a manager and has reached the fifth round of the FA Cup on just two occasions.

Wenham claims Newcastle should prioritise a cup run over finishing in the top four.

“Another big win in the cup. How good would it be for Howe to win a trophy?” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“First full season, first trophy since 1969, it would be incredible. There is a good chance they can do it as well.

“It’s only Man City left in the draw that would really worry me but if you can avoid them until the final, anything can happen.

“I imagine the fans will just be grateful for a trip to Wembley, if they do make the final, it must have been a long time since they were there.

“I think the owners will want some tangible sign of success as well and a trophy is the perfect example of that.”

Newcastle have not lifted silverware since 1969 as Joe Harvey’s side won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the predecessor to the UEFA Cup.

Going into the World Cup break, Howe’s side sit third, comfortably in the Champions League spots having only lost one league game this term.
