Pundit issues Joe Gomez claim after Liverpool latest – ‘no one saw that coming’

Joe Gomez was the real hero as Liverpool beat Man City 1-0 on Sunday (16 October).

That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Gomez, 25, started in a make-shift defence as Liverpool won their third game of the season thanks to a second-half strike from Mohamed Salah.

This was Gomez’s fifth Premier League start of the season.

Wenham was surprised by the defender’s “brilliant” performance as Erling Haaland failed to find the back of the net.

“It was a big occasion and the fans got behind the team,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I spoke last week and the quote that was taken was ‘where has the Liverpool team of the last 36 months gone?’.

“Well, there it was. Attacking, exciting going forward. Joe Gomez I thought was absolutely brilliant against Man City and he is a player who has come in for some stick.

“Up against a very, very high-quality of attacker, he managed to keep a clean sheet and look comfortable doing it.

“It’s the second time Liverpool have played City this season and in both games they have kept Erling Haaland very, very quiet.

“No one saw that coming but it’s a great result for Liverpool and something they can really build on now.”

Liverpool also beat City in the Community Shield on 30 July.

The Reds ran out 3-1 winners as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Darwin Nunez all found themselves on the scoresheet.

In other news, an ex-Premier League referee has demanded an extended Jurgen Klopp ban as “totally and utterly unacceptable” Liverpool footage emerges.
