Pundit issues ‘massive’ Steven Gerrard claim after Aston Villa source’s reveal

Noel Whelan has claimed injuries at Aston Villa are no “excuse” for Steven Gerrard as he faces losing his job at the Midlands giants.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the former Rangers boss is “choosing from a really good, strong squad” after spending “massive” money during the off-season.

As per BirminghamLive (17 October), Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos, Lucas Digne, Ludwig Augustinsson, and Cameron Archer are all currently on the treatment table at Aston Villa.

Matty Cash and Leon Bailey have also recently struggled for fitness.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (17 October) that Aston Villa have made up their minds that Gerrard will soon be sacked and have started the search for his successor.

The Midlands giants lost 2-0 against Chelsea on Sunday (16 October), dropping them to 16th in the Premier League.

Whelan suggested Gerrard will have “expected more from his players” during their bad start to the new campaign.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “The injuries aren’t an excuse, and I don’t think Gerrard will be using that as an excuse either.

“He’ll just be expecting a lot more from his players.

“He’s choosing from a really good, strong squad – and he’s brought in some very talented players for a massive amount of money.

“He will have expected more from his players, and I don’t think the players will have expected to start the season as they have.

“It puts pressure on the manager, and it’s a results-driven business.

“Fans pay good money. If you’re not getting those results, they will voice their disappointment.

“Things have got to turn around very quickly or you can only see him getting sacked.”
