Pundit issues ‘really surprising’ Rangers transfer claim amid £100m news

Noel Whelan has claimed he is “really surprised” to see Rangers let transfer deadline day pass by without making an addition.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, compared the Gers’ dealings to Celtic – who added midfielder Oliver Abildgaard on 1 September.

Rangers failed to make a single deadline day signing despite uncertainty surrounding the futures of key stars like Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent.

The Ibrox club secured their qualification to the Champions League group stages last month after an aggregate win over PSV Eindhoven.

Football Insider finance guru Kieran Maguire claimed on Twitter (25 August) that Rangers’ revenue for the year could top “£100million” after their Europa League success last term.

Whelan suggested the fans and the squad needed an extra “boost” in order to be competitive in Europe.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I’m really surprised.

“We saw Celtic strengthening their team all the way up to the deadline as they prepare for lots of games coming up – and European games, too.

“I felt like Rangers must have pulled in a lot of money last season and at the beginning of this season.

“I was thinking that they would be a bit more competitive in the market to give the squad and the fans that boost before the long season ahead.

“They’re going up against the elite in the Champions League – which they’ve been waiting for and dying for.

“You would have thought some of that money would have been spent on some extra help to get them through that challenge.”
