Pundit issues Steven Gerrard sack claim after Aston Villa latest

Steven Gerrard must pull off some “major” results to keep his job at Aston Villa.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the former Liverpool man’s future.

Aston Villa lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace on Saturday (20 August), meaning Gerrard’s side have only won three of their last 14 games going back to the end of last season.

Kenny insists “major” improvements are needed quickly.

“The timeline, I’m not sure, only the owners will know that,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I can see him being under massive pressure. It has been a difficult start for them, only winning one out of the three.

“They have won three of their last 14 or something like that. It’s a knock-on from last season which isn’t good for Aston Villa.

“I know they won in the League Cup, that might give them a little bit of a boost. But, listen, Gerrard is under massive pressure to get some major results soon.

“They need a bit more consistency. They just seem to be so inconsistent. To win three games out of 14, they haven’t gone on and won three or four on the trot.

“Sometimes you need that. They have spent a lot of money and they have had problems with Tyrone Mings and changing the captaincy.

“All of that has brought attention to the club. Is there an issue there?

It will be interesting to see how Villa pan out over the next few weeks and see what happens to Gerrard if he doesn’t get any more wins.”
