Pundit issues Turnbull warning after third Celtic star suffers hamstring injury

Alan Hutton has urged Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou to “scale back” his “aggressive” training methods after another injury blow.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 56-year-old will have to “be careful” with the Hoops players over the festive period.

David Turnbull is the latest Celtic star to suffer a hamstring injury after limping off 25 minutes into the League Cup final triumph on Sunday (19 December).

Jota, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Albian Ajeti have also picked up hamstring complaints in recent weeks.

Hutton suggested Postecoglou’s “aggressive” training regime could be behind the spate of injuries.

He drew comparisons to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side, with the Whites in the midst of an injury crisis at present.

“The manager will have to be looking at the type of injuries these Celtic players are getting,” Hutton told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Jota is out, hamstring. Turnbull is out, hamstring. Kyogo had a hamstring problem and just about made it back for the final at the weekend.

“We know the way Postecoglou plays, aggressive, front-foot pressing – and that will carry over to the training ground.

“It’s like Bielsa with Leeds. If these players are playing a lot of minutes and giving their all out there on the pitch, sometimes you have to scale back the training.

Whether he’s already doing that, I’m not sure. But he has to be careful with these recurring muscle problems.”

Celtic are expected to be without Jota and Turnbull for the crucial Old Firm showdown on 2 January.

Furuhashi has already returned to action, scoring a brace on Sunday to secure the League Cup trophy.
