Pundit issues verdict on Pep Guardiola quitting Man City after new reveal
Noel Whelan has backed Pep Guardiola to renew his contract at Man City despite his hints at “taking a break” from management.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 51-year-old will remain at the Etihad Stadium until he wins the Champions League.
Speaking to Sky Sports about his future (21 August), Guardiola revealed he will speak to the club about his future “after the World Cup” – which concludes in December.
He hinted at “taking a break” from management due to English football’s rigorous scheduling.
The Spaniard’s current contract at the Etihad Stadium expires at the end of this season.
During his time at Man City, Guardiola has claimed four league titles, four League Cups, and one FA Cup.
Whelan claimed he will remain at the club until he wins the Champions League – a competition he won twice with former side Barcelona.
When asked if Guardiola will renew his deal, he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Yeah – I can’t see Pep anywhere else.
“He’s still got a job to do at Man City.
“If he wins the Champions League this season, that’s the only way he will walk away and take a break.
“Until he brings that trophy back to the Etihad Stadium, I think he’ll keep going and going.
“It’s the big one for him, and it’s unfinished business. He’ll regret it if he walks away without winning it.

“He’s still refreshing and rotating his squad, bringing new players in. I think his contract will be renewed.
“They can’t afford to let him go with the football they’re playing right now and the squad he’s built.”
