Pundit issues verdict on Pep Guardiola signing new Man City deal after official news

Pep Guardiola will not rush into signing a new Man City contract this summer, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted Jurgen Klopp’s new deal at Liverpool will have no impact on Guardiola’s thinking.

The pair both had two years left on their contracts before the Liverpool boss penned a new four-year deal earlier this year (28 May).

Since then, Guardiola clinched his fourth Premier League title with Man City in the last five seasons but the club are in no rush to tie him down.

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told club media on Monday (30 May) that they will wait for the “right time” before they begin negotiations with their manager.

“In his head, he’ll just be thinking ‘I’ve got two years left’,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“That’s where his head will be at. Why does he have to sign a new contract? Just because Klopp did?

“He can sign a new contract next year or in two years’ time. There’s no rush.

“He will probably see how much it has taken out of him. With the schedule that Man City have he doesn’t get too much time off.

“He will go and enjoy his summer and get back for pre-season. With the contract talk, there’s no rush.”

As well as four Premier League titles, Guardiola has also won four EFL Cups and the FA Cup once.

He is set to enter his seventh year at the Ethihad – the longest time he has ever spent at one club as a manager.

In other news, Man City are on course for a points deduction as an investigation is launched.
