Pundit lambasts ‘ludicrous’ Man United-Antony update
Man United have paid “ludicrous” money for former Ajax winger Antony.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
On Tuesday (30 August) Man United confirmed they had reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Antony, 22.
The deal was then confirmed on Thursday (1 September) in a deal that Sky Sports claim is worth £85million.
He becomes Man United’s fifth senior signing of the summer and the second to follow Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez earlier in the window.
Wenham can’t believe how much Man United have shelled out on their latest signing.
“In what world can someone who has only played in the Eredivisie be worth £85million?” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“It’s ludicrous, unbelievable money. Fair play to Ajax, they seem to extract top dollar for all of their players, meanwhile, they were offering us £14million for Bergwijn.
“Man United have spent a fortune on Ten Hag who has essentially given £175million back to Ajax this summer.
“They will be popping bottles of champagne. They have extracted top money for the players they have sold this summer so fair play.
“Antony might be a very good player, I just think it is a lot of money for a player who hasn’t ever kicked a ball in the top-five leagues.”

Antony scored eight goals in 23 league appearances for Ajax last season.
He also chipped in with four assists as he helped his side win a second successive league title.
In other news, an ex-Fifa official has said Scott McTominay is a ‘lucky boy’ as ‘suspicious’ Man United footage emerges.
