Pundit lambasts ‘schoolboy’ David de Gea after what he’s seen at Man United – ‘what is he thinking?’
Noel Whelan has slammed Man United shot-stopper David de Gea for his “schoolboy” errors in the loss against Brentford.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested it is not the first time the 31-year-old has cost his side dearly.
De Gea dropped two clangers as Man United slumped to a 4-0 defeat away at Brentford on Saturday (13 August).
The Spanish shot-stopper let Josh Dasilva’s tame shot squirm through his arms for the first goal, before opening the door for Mathias Jensen to score the second after a lax pass to Christian Eriksen.
De Gea has come close to leaving Old Trafford on a number of occasions, but Erik ten Hag placed his faith in the former Atletico Madrid man by shipping Dean Henderson out on loan this summer.
He is out of contract at the end of the season – with Man United holding the option of an extra year.
Whelan claimed De Gea’s errors were the “catalyst” for the historic defeat.
“It was a collective disaster from Man United – but it started with De Gea,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“It’s not the first time we’ve seen these kinds of schoolboy errors from him.
“I’m not a goalkeeper, but I know that when a shot comes in from distance – you get your body behind it.
“What is he thinking? He’s an international goalkeeper, supposedly one of the best in the world – it’s just ridiculous.

“That was the catalyst and the precedent for what they were going to produce all game.
“Mistake after mistake after mistake.”
