Pundit lambasts ‘terrible’ Man United plan after Ralf Rangnick reveal
Alan Hutton has insisted Man United have gone backwards after Ralf Rangnick’s appointment backfired on the board.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international admitted the Red Devils’ plans have gone “terribly wrong” since the 63-year-old’s arrival at Old Trafford.
United confirmed on Sunday (29 May) that Rangnick will not take up a consultancy role as originally planned after becoming Austria manager.
The German coach initially agreed to stay on as a consultant for two years after an interim spell as manager.
Hutton insisted things “got worse” for United during Rangnick’s reign.
He admitted a “clean break” is best for all parties involved.
Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It went terribly wrong. It’s no fault of his or Man United’s. There was an opportunity to bring somebody in with fresh ideas.
“A style of play that, hopefully, the players would have taken to, got on with and become better. It’s just not worked at all, I mean at all. If anything it’s got worse.
“It makes sense that they make a clean break. Manchester United have a clean break and they go on with the process moving forward.”
Rangnick won 11 of his 29 games in charge of the Red Devils.
All but one of his wins came in the Premier League as United finished sixth in the table.

They were knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough and the Champions League by Atletico Madrid.
The German has been replaced by Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.
