Pundit lambasts ‘whinging’ Pep Guardiola as Sky’s new Man City footage screened

Noel Whelan has told Man City boss Pep Guardiola to stop “whinging” after Phil Foden’s goal was “rightfully disallowed” against Liverpool on Sunday (16 October).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted “a lot was let go” during the Merseysiders’ 1-0 win over their perennial title rivals.

As shown on footage from Sky Sports’ Ref Watch segment (17 October), Foden saw his strike disallowed following VAR review after Erling Haaland fouled Fabinho outside the box.

Former referee Dermot Gallagher also pointed out a potential foul on goalkeeper Alisson also committed by Haaland.

As quoted by Sky Sports (16 October), Guardiola was left fuming with referee Anthony Taylor’s decision – insisting there were “a million fouls” similar to the strikers’ during the game.

He also suggested the home crowd had an impact on the decision, adding: “This is Anfield.”

Guardiola’s opposite number, Jurgen Klopp, was shown a straight red card for his reaction after Mohamed Salah was denied a free-kick late on.

Whelan insisted the Spaniard would hold the opposite view if the decision went the other way and called on him to “be honest”.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t know why he’s moaning. It’s a foul.

“If it wasn’t given against his side, he’d be saying it’s a foul.

“There are two fouls before the goal goes in – so you can choose whichever one you want.

“I don’t know what he is whinging about. It’s clear to see, and I hope he’s watched it back.

“He’s got to be honest – I love the way he wants to stick up for his team, but you’ve got to be honest with it as well.

“Look, it’s one of those temperamental games where a lot was let go. But in the grand old scheme of things, it was rightfully disallowed.”
