Pundit ‘laughs’ at Harvey Elliott after Liverpool reveal via Sky – ‘you can’t do that’
Frank McAvennie has claimed Harvey Elliott won’t benefit from a striking coach at Liverpool.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker said that being a striker is “all about instinct” and that skill can’t be taught.
According to Sky Sports (20 July), Elliott, 19, has been working with individual striker coach Scott Chickelday on his finishing.
The striker used the knowledge of Chickelday over the summer to work on his shooting before joining the Reds for pre-season.
The England under-21s international missed the majority of last season following an ankle injury.
The striker was side-lined for four months.
When asked for his assessment of the latest, McAvennie told Football Insider: “You can’t hire a striking coach.
“They’ve got Kenny Dalglish there, some of the best strikers that the world has ever seen walking in and out the club. Why would he want to hire a striking coach?
“You can’t coach a striker, it’s instinct. What they can do is get somebody flinging balls at you and getting shooting practice. Maybe that’s what they’re doing and calling it a striking coach.
“It makes me laugh. I think he’ll be doing extra training, he’ll be practicing shooting he won’t be getting taught how to be a striker you can’t teach that. It’s all about instinct.“

Elliott made 13 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side across all competitions last season.
In those outings he scored once and provided one assist.
