Pundit hails ‘brilliant signing’ at Tottenham after Lloris news
Tottenham have pulled off a “brilliant signing” by tying Hugo Lloris down to a new contract, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 35-year-old’s deal is a “real sign of intent” from Spurs.
Tottenham confirmed on Friday (21 January) that Lloris had penned a new deal running until the summer of 2024.
His old terms were set to expire in the summer.
Whelan insisted Spurs need stability following a turbulent couple of years.
As such, he heralded the club for tying Lloris down.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Club captain, one of the best goalkeepers in Europe for the past 10 years. won the World Cup.
“It’s so important to have the sort of players at your club. What a brilliant signing, again, just to get him to stay at the football club. I think Conte coming in has made that better for Lloris to stay at Tottenham.
“It’s becoming a club now that needs stability, it needs that continuity. How are you going to go and replace Lloris? Even at his age, as a goalkeeper, he’s still got still two, three seasons left in him.
“You don’t want to lose those sort of characters and professionals that you have at the football club.
“That’s a real sign of intent from Tottenham that they have got the pull and the power to keep these sort of players at the club.”

Lloris joined Spurs from Olympique Lyonnais back in 2012.
The 136-cap France international has played 395 times for the Lilywhites.
In other news, Tottenham have had an eight-figure transfer bid accepted.
