Pundit makes ‘horrendous’ Anthony Gordon claim after Everton source’s update

Anthony Gordon leaving Everton to join Chelsea would be a “horrendous” loss for the club.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the youngster’s future.

On Tuesday (16 August), sources from the club told Football Insider Chelsea are ready to increase their bid for Everton star Anthony Gordon to £50million.

The winger has started both of the Toffees’ Premier League games this season, often playing as a striker in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Gordon has three years left on his contract at Goodison Park after signing a five-year deal in 2020.

McLeish struggles to see how Everton would replace Gordon for £50million.

“It would be a horrendous loss,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“It would leave Everton destitute in regards to quality young players. He is only going to get better. The question is how they spend this £50million?

“Who do they bring in? If Frank is given that money to spend, nowadays you are not going to get a world superstar for that kind of money.

“It’s a lot of money, you could get a very good English player who could steady the ship a wee bit.

“But you take the Anthony Gordon money, do you spend it on replacing him or one another area of the squad where you need to strengthen?

“We’ll wait and see if that happens and if Frank has a strategy.”

Everton

Gordon made 35 appearances in the 2021-22 Premier League season scoring four goals and registering two assists.

He has made 62 total appearances for the club, making his debut on 7 December 2017 in Everton’s Europa League match away to Apollon Limassol.
