Pundit makes Liverpool claim after new details emerge on Chelsea signing Niguez
Kevin Campbell insists Liverpool simply can’t financially compete with Chelsea after they missed out on signing Saul Niguez.
The Arsenal icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the Blues completed some late business.
According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (12 July), Jurgen Klopp’s side had an opening bid of £35million rejected by Atletico Madrid for Niguez.
Niguez, 26, joined Chelsea on a season-long loan from Atletico on deadline day.
The Blues have the chance to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.
The versatile midfielder made 41 appearances for Diego Simeone’s title winners last season.
Campbell isn’t surprised Chelsea beat Liverpool to the signing of Niguez because of the London side’s financial strength.
“Chelsea have deep pockets,” Campbell told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.
“It’s really hard to compete with them. When they make that move, the fee upfront, the loan then the possible signing fee.
“Chelsea could pay the king’s ransom, that’s the issue. Liverpool work well but they work to a budget.
“City, Chelsea and Man United can blow anyone else out of the water when it comes to wages.
“Even if you are Liverpool, sometimes Liverpool can’t compete.”

Liverpool failed to sign a new central midfielder this summer after Gini Wijnaldum left the club on a free transfer.
Defender Ibrahima Konate was the only arrival at Anfield this summer as the Reds received a much-needed boost to their backline.
