Pundit on Billy Gilmour re-signing for Chelsea after confirmed news

Frank McAvennie has insisted Billy Gilmour won’t rejoin Chelsea despite Graham Potter taking over as head coach.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said a return to the Blues wouldn’t guarantee game time, despite the change of leadership.

On 8 September, Chelsea confirmed the appointment of Potter as their new manager after they sacked Thomas Tuchel.

The former Brighton manager had signed Gilmour, 21, a week before he made the switch to Stamford Bridge.

According to the Sun (10 September), the Scotland international was convinced to join the Seagulls by Potter.

The midfielder was initially put off a move away from Stamford Bridge but was a fan of the way Potter plays which eventually convinced him of a move.

When asked if the new Blues boss would look to bring Gilmour back to the London club on loan, McAvennie told Football Insider: “No.

That’s a great team for him down at Brighton. I’m fairly protective of him because he’s a Scottish player. If he goes back to Chelsea he’ll be a bit-part player again.

Once he gets in the Brighton team he’ll stay in it. It’s a shame but that’s what happens. It doesn’t matter who comes in they’ll love the talent of Billy Gilmour.

Gilmour has only featured in one game for Brighton this season after his deadline day move.

He came off the bench for the final minute of the 5-2 win over Leicester City last Sunday (4 September).

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Norwich where he made 28 appearances across all competitions.
