Pundit on Newcastle completing surprise Mason Mount hijack – ‘I can tell you this…’
Alan Hutton has tipped Mason Mount to join Liverpool this summer despite Newcastle United’s capability to offer him a big-money salary.
The former Tottenham and Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, cited the influence of manager Jurgen Klopp as a potential factor in the 24-year-old heading to Anfield.
Sources told this site on Monday (24 April) that Liverpool remain confident of signing Mount this summer – despite interest from Newcastle, Arsenal and Man United.
Chelsea will also endeavour to tie the midfielder down to a new deal – with his current contract set to expire in June 2024.
Mount currently earns a reported wage of £80,000-a-week, and it is believed that he wants an increase to well above £200,000-a-week in order to remain at Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle are well-placed to secure Champions League qualification for the 2023-24 campaign, while Liverpool are languishing in seventh.
Mount has notched just three goals and six assists in 35 appearances during a trying season for Chelsea.
Hutton told Football Insider’s Charlotte Cohen: “I think he’d choose Liverpool.
“Could Newcastle offer higher wages? Probably. I can tell you, they would have to in order to try and get him to choose them.
“I’ve just got a feeling he would love to play under a manager like Klopp.
“Liverpool are going to bounce back. You don’t become a bad team overnight.

“They’ll be bringing in players to improve the squad this summer, and I think Mount would definitely do that.
“He can play a number of positions in that Liverpool midfield.”
