Pundit on Newcastle United potentially signing Cody Gakpo after January talks open
Newcastle United should not rush to sign Cody Gakpo in January despite his impressive performances for club and country.
That is according to Spurs expert John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Sources told this site on Friday (16 December) that Man United are the only club to have held talks with PSV Eindhoven about signing Gakpo as they continue to work on a January deal.
It is believed the Dutch club wanted £30million for the forward in the summer, but are now holding out for £45million after his exploits at the Qatar World Cup.
According to the Daily Mirror (15 December), the Red Devils face competition from Real Madrid and Newcastle for Gakpo’s signature.
However, Wenham is urging interested clubs to be cautious.
“I still stand by what I have said previously about the Dutch league,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Steven Bergwijn tore it up over there and I watched him for years never really doing it for Tottenham, now he has gone back there. Gakpo has performed well at the World Cup but has he fully proven himself?
“That’s what any team who wants to sign him need to consider. I have seen Newcastle linked among others. Can Newcastle afford another big transfer fee for the deal to then not work out?
“I think anyone who wants Gakpo should wait until the end of the season and see how he reacts after the World Cup.
“His stats are impressive, yes, but don’t forget it’s the Dutch league.”

In addition to his three strikes in Qatar, the sensation has notched a combined 30 goals and assists for PSV in just 24 games.
Newcastle get their season back underway against Bournemouth in the League Cup on Tuesday (20 December).
