Pundit ‘really surprised’ after source’s update today on Newcastle bid to sign Rodon
Tottenham defender Joe Rodon would be “an upgrade” on the current centre-halves at Newcastle United, according to Paul Robinson.
The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he’s been “really surprised” by the 24-year-old’s lack of game time under Antonio Conte.
The Magpies are in the market for defensive reinforcements this month.

The latest from a Newcastle source to Football Insider on Sunday (2 January) is that the club are leading the race to sign Rodon and are hopeful of agreeing a deal.
The Wales international has “100 per cent” set his heart on exiting the north London club in search of regular game time.
When asked by Football Insider if Rodon would be a welcome addition at St. James’ Park, Robinson said: “He hasn’t had a look in since Conte’s arrival.
“It’s really surprised me because at the end of Mourinho’s reign he got quite a few games. He looked good as well. He showed that he has the quality to play at this level.
“Eddie Howe desperately needs to add to that squad. He needs better players in most areas of the pitch. That is why they are where they are in the league.
“I know Eddie has said he’s happy to work with the players he has got but he knows they need new players in.

“Rodon has impressed me when he has played and I think he’d be an upgrade on what Newcastle currently have.
“Can they get Rodon on a permanent deal? We will wait and see. I think a loan deal is more likely. It will be tough for Newcastle though as players don’t want a relegation on their CV.”
